Fidel Castro Reported Dead – True or False?

by Jack Smith on Nov.28, 2009, under Politics

There is a strong rumour around that Fidel Castro is dead. Reports have been circulating from unconfirmed sources and have been listed high in Google Trends.

It is not that unusual for a report of a dying celebrity to be heavily featured in the news whether officially confirmed or not. Recently we had reports of Lady Gaga supposedly killed in a bomb blast or from a narcotic overdose depending on which source you read.

Due to his failing health, Fidel Castro has been reported as “on his deathbed” for some time now. In July 2006 he had emergency intestinal surgery to stem bleeding from diverticulitis, and since then he has been under constant medical supervision. He has constructed a state-of-the-art hospital suite in his principal residence where he is surrounded by his well meaning family and a host of Cuba’s finest doctors. His failing health made him give up power some years ago and hand over the reigns to his brother Raul. Since then he has only been seen in public once or twice.

The state of health of “El Presidente” has been the subject of speculation for some time, but little or no information is given out by the Cuban authorities. Apparently Perez Hilton tried to report that Castro was dead in 2007, but that story turned out to be false.

In January 2009 Castro asked Cubans not to worry about his failing heath or lack of recent appearances, nor to be disturbed by his future death. Inevitably the rumours are likely to linger on for a while yet.

Michigan Health Insurance Inflicts Costly Errs If Not Understood

by Holly Bentz on Nov.02, 2009, under Politics

Despite the assortment of Michigan health insurance plans, baffled consumers tend to buy unsuitable policies or forgo coverage, altogether. Many find that affordable health coverage tends to fall short on premiums and high on out-of-pocket expenses. Quite often, the problem stems from not knowing the difference between deductibles and coinsurance. With the state of Michigan’s growing unemployment rate and uninsured woos, hospital bills continue to plague cash strapped citizens.

Approximately, 47 percent of Americans don’t understand their health insurance or the difference between co-payment, deductible, and coinsurance. The problem is that consumers shopping for Michigan health insurance are unaware of what they’re buying. In the end, many are left to pay medical bills they thought their policy would cover.

Pregnant for the first time, Wanda Jones, 32 considered her bases covered when she became pregnant. The low premium medical coverage she purchased for her small business unveiled a few surprises. Despite a $2000 deductible, Ms. Jones learned that delivery would cost an extra $4000 at the hospital.

According to analysts, these medical coverage missteps happen all the time. As an expectant mother facing childbirth on her own, running a craft store in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the out-of-pocket deductible exceeded Ms. Jones savings account. She reports, “Since the jargon used in Michigan health insurance plans is so confusing. I never made time to understand the policy,” Had Ms. Jones asked the insurance agent to explain the policy she concludes, “I would have reconsidered single parenting.”

Mike Novelli, president of MichiganHealthandLife.com says that selecting the right Michigan health insurance plan has a lot to do with the broker selling the policy. If the agent neglects to disclose all the policy’s details, there are generally going to be some surprises. He advises consumers to avoid unscrupulous brokers by obtaining quotes from an agent who vends an assortment of Michigan health insurance plans. He also recommends recognizing the following shortlist of ethical attributes:

- Provides a comprehensive overview of each medical plan’s policies, defining low premiums with deductibles and coinsurance out-of-pocket costs.

- Doesn’t charge an application fee. (There’s no cost involved to apply for Michigan health insurance).

- Offers professional, resourceful advice free of pushy sales tactics.

Following The Bullets In California

by Gus Kalakis on Oct.24, 2009, under Politics

The Governator has put his signature on a bunch of bills recently, including a new bill that requires ammo suppliers to store info from buyers. Ammunition sellers must track thumbprints, signatures, and driver’s license information.

In addition to the recording requirements, the bill also does away with all mail-order and sales made over the internet. All sales under the new bill must be performed in the presence of the seller.

The governor’s signature reverses his earlier position.

“Although I have previously vetoed legislation similar to this measure, local governments have demonstrated that requiring ammunition vendors to keep records on ammunition sales improves public safety,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

The head of Gun Owners of California said the law, which takes effect in 2011, will treat gun owners “like registered sex offenders,” the Los Angeles Times writes.

“We think it was a devastating mistake,” said Sam Paredes, executive director of the group, which represents 30,000 gun owners. In a separate statement, the group elaborates.

Despite signing this bill, the governor has also vetoed bills that would require additional signatures when buying a gun. Additionally, he vetoed a bill that would have put limits on the locations for gun shows.

Here are some other measures Schwarzenegger signed into law:

Out of state, pre-banned same-sex marriages will be recognized in California.

Prior to getting cosmetic surgery, patients will now have to have a physical examination. This bill, known informally as the Donda West Bill, follows the death of Kanye West’s mother from complications surrounding her cosmetic surgery procedure.

Photographers are now subject to penalties of up to fifty-thousand dollars for taking or dissemination of photos of the rich and famous during personal activities.

People running for office may not pay spouses for working on the candidates campaign.

May 22 was proclaimed Harvey Milk Day, recognizing the birthday of the slain gay rights activist and San Francisco city supervisor.

Finally, the governor is encouraging law-makers to revamp the state’s tax code which he considers completely outdated and not able to keep up with our information based society.

Report on California Criminal Activity- Gangs

by Gus Kalakis on Oct.10, 2009, under Politics

In 2005, the California Criminal Intel Bureau reported the following Executive Summary regarding crimes committed by gangs and terrorists. This report is compiled in order to predict and stop these types of illegal criminal enterprises. Here are some of the trending behaviors the report found:

Many communities have been experiencing a reduction in gang activity as a result of gang injunctions. These efforts have reduced various gang-related activities and made some California communities safer from the dangers of gang violence.

While violent activity between gangs has been part of their history, in 2005 there was a marked redirection of violence toward law enforcement. Tragically, this re-focusing resulted in the deaths of more than 10 California law enforcement officers.

A governmental anti-gang initiative known as Community Shield, has been active in targeting MS-13 members (which is a Sureno gang). Several MS-13 members have been arrested relating to various crimes both violent and non-violent. Some of these include: narcotics offenses, grand theft auto, and various violations relating to paroled individuals.

Authorities note that many Asian gang members suspected of serious crimes flee to other states to elude capture.

The raketeer influenced corrupt orgs. Act, informally referred to as RICO, has led to many convictions for criminal conspiracies. RICO has been especially successful in getting convictions of outlaw motorcycle gangs. Convictions for murders, drug dealing, and other criminal enterprises have been obtain through continued use of RICO.

California has not suffered an attack by al-Qaeda. Authorities successfully prevented plots in 2000 and 2002 aimed at Los Angeles. It is believed that law enforcement initiatives specifically targeting this group have been largely successful in preventing their activities.

The United States prison system is the latest arena to experience an increase in terrorist organization. Recent investigations into these prison-system groups has heightened law enforcement’s awareness of these activities. These groups continue to grow and get more attention from U.S. law enforcement agencies.

And In This Ring We Have Tort Reform

by Gus Kalakis on Oct.04, 2009, under Politics

Great article by Michael Hiltzik on LA Times today about tort reforms role as health cares circus sideshow. As Hiltzik puts it:

“Insurance companies love it because the less money they pay out to plaintiffs, the more they get to keep. Republicans love it because trial lawyers give three-quarters of their political donations to Democrats. And Democrats pay it lip service because theyre afraid to look like lawyer lovers.

Scapegoating medical liability as the reason for high health care costs is certainly nothing new. It just so happens that it is a convenient argument to make during debates on health care. “Frivolous lawsuits are causing this problem,” they shout. Are you surprised that the only people making these arguments are the ones who would benefit from not medical responsibility?

That facts according to Hiltzik are:

Liability for medical mistakes is estimated to contribute to no more than three percent of all U.S. health care spending. That means out of the over one-trillion dollars of annual health care costs, approx. fifty-billion dollars is comprised of malpractice litigation. In other words, even if we eliminated medical liability altogether, we would be in the exact same situation with health care.

The myth of medical liability being the main cause of health care costs has to end. We need to start focusing on the real problems and inefficiencies of the current system and stop chasing ghosts. Even if we got rid of medical liability in total, we would still be facing the same problems. Therefore, let’s shift the discussion to the real problems and stop filing in with the insurance lobby.

In fact, in places where tort reform has taken firm root, we have not seen a dramatic decrease in health care costs. Do you know what we have seen in those areas? Greater profitability for insurance companies. Even worse, people with legitimate personal injury and medical malpractice claims go without compensation.

Oxfam Blamed For Closure Of Second Hand Bookshops

by Jon Hunter on Aug.13, 2009, under Politics

Oxfam is under fire from second hand book dealers. It is rare that organisations feel the need criticise such a well loved charity as Oxfam. But things have got so bad for second hand book dealers that they are willing to speak out and claim that Oxfams charity bookshops are putting them out of business.

They claim that Oxfam is the “Tesco of the second hand book market” and that the unfair competition from Oxfam is responsible for the close of many seconds hand book shops over the last 15 years.

Oxfam opened its first seconds hand book shop in 1987 and now has 121 second hand bookshops in different parts of the country. Has sold over 19 million pounds worth of books last year, and is currently the largest retailer of second hand books in Europe.

Book Dealers are arguing that Oxfam is able to compete unfairly in the marketplace due to there charitable status, they get free staffing from volunteers , they do not have to pay for stock and they get an 80% reduction on business rates.

Oxfam have responded by stating that there are many other factors currently affecting the viability of second hand book sellers, such as the fall in new book prices due to big retailers, and the ability to buy second hand books online.

Dealers are unclear about what measures should be taken. Do they want Oxfam prohibited from selling books? Do they object to an obvious charity receiving charitable status? Do they wish for free product and staffing to be donated to themselves by general populace so they can make personal profit?
