The Deregulation of the American Electric Industry

by Jerry Dyess Jr. on Sep.08, 2009, under Government

In the1990s the Federal government embarked on a policy of deregulating the electricity industry in America. It was believed that this America electricity deregulation would help American businesses and consumers save money on electricity. Even though the deregulation process has been going on in the natural gas industry for well over a decade, little has been done with American electric utility operations and rates since they are much more complex to figure. As a result of this, it is believed that electric utility restructuring will have a far greater impact on facility energy costs for consumers and the way operations are handled in coming years. Before we discuss this deregulation, there are a few concepts that we better need to understand.

The first thing to understand is the term utility and what it encompasses, a utility refers to a provider, which has the sole purpose of supplying a commodity. This commodity must be classified as tangible or it must be a service, which has been determined to be vital to the public. This includes such things such as electricity, water and gas. The role of utility providers includes transportation of the commodity, production and distribution. Electricity providers much generate the power, transport it over wires to the various areas and then distribute to individuals.

Originally, the government determined that due to the vital nature of the utility that regulation within the industry by the government was the best option. This was done primarily to prevent providers from limiting access to the utility and price gouging. It also allowed geographical monopolies. This gave control of a particular area over to a single utility provider. The geographical area is known either as a service area or as a franchise territory. This was at first believed to provide reliable service over a large distribution area and gave the provider the right to determine the price, conditions and terms of service.

To prevent the misuse of these geographical monopolies both the state and federal government imposed regulations. The federal regulations handle primarily the interstate transactions on a wholesale level. The state regulations handle problems such as quality control and pricing. Despite regulations customers has little recourse and little say in the rates offered due to the monopoly status.

Electricity deregulation legislation however, is designed to make it possible for the consumer to choose from a number of service providers. This encourages competitive pricing and offers the potential for savings to the consumer. It also allows customers to choose companies, which offer environmentally friendly and renewable energy sources such as wind, or solar generation rather than choosing a provider that uses power generated by coal or nuclear means. Coal still accounts for more than a third of the power generated in the USA. In spite of the deregulation legislation, only a few states have implemented or are in the process of implementing a competitive market. The remaining states either have done nothing or have halted any further study into deregulation despite advantages.

One exciting development that could help to move the remaining states along the path to America electricity deregulation was the legislation that President Obama signed into being in June of 2009. This legislation included incentives for utilities that begin switching to cleaner, more renewable sources of generation like the use of solar or wind generators.

Additionally, homeowners and businesses who install generation systems have the opportunity to take advantage of incentives to pay for initial costs as well as having any excess power transferred to the main provider grid. What is more these excess power much be purchased by the providers. A device known as a net meter accurately tracks the wattage, which is brought from a provider and alternatively purchased by the provider. This provides the possibility of significant savings for the owner and an additional source of power for the providers that are not dependent on less effective and efficient energy sources. Experts estimate that savings could hit as high as two billion dollars annually between 2012 and 2042.

There are a number of countries already ahead of the USA when it comes to providing the majority of consumers with clean renewable energy. The more generation systems that are installed the closer the USA comes to these countries and sun and wind power are infinitely renewable and free sources of energy.

How to Choose The Right Candidate

by Beverly Gartland on Aug.19, 2009, under Politics

3. What do the Issues say about the candidate?: Look at proposals for addressing problems. What is the candidates voting record on the issue? Do they Understanding the history and the present situation, then moving forward with a specific strategic plan. Where do they Stand on current problems and how to resolve them. Differentiate words, rhetoric and personality from actual plans and actions for addressing and resolving issues and problems. Realistic plans for the future.

4. Watch the Debates: Consider recording the debates so you can replay them and compare responses made during the different debates. Observe the candidate’s body language, subtle gestures and speech intonation to get added information about the candidate’s response and feelings. 7. Which statistics are correct? Sometimes each candidate offers different statistics on the same issue, sometimes both candidates are correct, however in other cases this may not be true. Some questions for interpreting the candidates statistics: How can the candidates give different statistics on the same issue? When was the data collected, what years or intervals were used? Who collected the data (was it a group or corporation with a vested interest)? Was the Sample large of enough for accurate results?

8. Very Important: Be aware of your own biases. If you already have a favorite, it will probably affect how you evaluate the information about your candidate as well as the other candidate(s). Try to keep an open mind, consider all information and use objectivity.

LEED Green Associate – Learn About Being Green

by Charles Andrews on Aug.16, 2009, under Government

Conventional technology has managed to do more harm than good for our planet. In a way human beings have managed to out live their welcome on the planet by making many plants and animals extinct. This has made it difficult for people to live in harmony with Mother Nature. If things proceed the way they are then it’s not going to be long before every one of us will find ourselves in trouble. This is why institutions such as the LEED Green Associate educate people about green technologies.

When you look at green technology it gives you all the convinces of regular technology minus the harm it does to the planet. However a couple of decades back green technology was considered impractical because it was too expensive to implement. This in turn slowed down the momentum of green technology.

The good news is that cost resistance towards green technology is slowly loosing ground. People have begun to realize that the expense of the environment is nothing compared to the high energy costs. This positive shift is thus giving green technology a boost in the right direction.

Today the American president has taken the first step towards green technology by investing in the green movement. The government has begun to show support for the potential and the future of sustainable energy. The stimulus package set forth by the Obama administration has plans to create over 3. 5 million jobs in the green energy sector over the next twenty four months. The private sector however has been slower to adapt than the public one.

When you study the private sector’s resistance towards implementing green technology for cost reasons its not totally baseless. When green technology first began it was expensive and the return on investment was not much. So businesses hesitated when it came to investing in green technology with hindered the progress of green technology in the private sector. However with the rise of demand in green technology the cost of implementing green technology has decreased.

According to the national association of realtors the costs related to sustainable and green construction has decreased significant ally. It’s decreased to appoint where green construction costs only 1 – 2% higher than conventional constructions. The savings are however over the 25% mark. When people see these figures they don’t mind spending a few extra dollars implementing green technology.

What LEED Green Associate really does is it educates people about various green technologies and their implementation. Keeping in mind that the future of our technology in coming years is almost exclusively going to be green, people need to be trained to speed up the process. What used to be thought of as an expensive exercise is now considered a slightly expensive alternative to conventional technology.

When people see the amount of money they can save with such technologies it’s not a hard thing for them to invest a few extra dollars in green technology. Today the possibilities that this great technology holds is boundless. What is required though is education about green technologies and how it should be used. The trend towards green technologies has gained momentum but more momentum is required in order for these technologies to fully replace conventional ones.
