Army Ribbons and Their Meanings

by James Morgan on Sep.30, 2009, under Politics

Some unsuspecting civilians might think that army ribbons and thin ribbons are nothing more than pieces of medal attached to cloth. But if they were to dig a bit deeper, they would see that these seemingly mundane objects can be more precious than gold.

To those who have served in the Armed Forces there can be nothing more meaningful than to be recognized for the tremendous amount of work and sacrifice that one has put forth. Each medal and ribbon has its own criteria and, in turn, its own design that has been thoughtfully planned to symbolize its own unique cause.

The Army Medal of Honor is a medal that is awarded to a member of the military armed forces who displayed fearless bravery and courage at the risk of his or her own life while serving in action against an enemy of the United States. The medal is suspended by a neck ribbon with 13 white stars.

The Bronze Star Medal is an award that has a ribbon adorned with white, blue and scarlet stripes. To a lesser degree than the criteria required for the Silver Star, this is awarded for distinguished acts of heroism or achievements of meritorious nature or excellent service worthy of recognition that do not involve participation in aerial flight.

The Purple Heart is awarded to soldiers who were wounded or killed while serving in the armed forces during action engaged against an enemy or opposing force of a foreign country. The medal is suspended by a ribbon that consists of white and purple stripes.

The Good Conduct Medal is awarded to soldiers based on exemplary behavior and efficiency throughout a time while the soldier is enlisted in active duty. The immediate commander is the one who approves the award. The medal is suspended by a ribbon that consists of soldier red and white stripes.

The Prisoner of War Medal is suspended by a ribbon that consists of Old Glory Red and White stripes. It is awarded to a soldier who, while engaged in military action against an enemy of the United States, was held captive or was taken prisoner. Civilians with past military service that involved a period of captivity are also eligible for the award.

As you can clearly see, army ribbons and medals have deep and important meanings than what first meets the eye. If one were to probe a bit deeper, they would see that each medal and ribbon has its own meaning, each for a different act that deserves recognition from his or her country and people.

Does Office Politics Happen In Every Organization?

by Glenn HUghes on Sep.30, 2009, under Politics

Does my employers culture suit me? Have you considered the implications for me and my family carefully enough? Is working long hours going to suit me in the short, medium or long term? Lets face it, there are times in our lives when its easier to work long hours- when youve just graduated, or even when the kids have grown up are some examples.

Long hours worked when meeting a deadline can sometimes be a good thing. Short periods of intense hard work do someone no harm at all- in fact it can be good for you. Long hours away from the family all the time- thats a completely different matter. Spend too much time at the office and the next time you look around it could be the divorce court. Perspective is the key as well as good communication. If your hours are becoming a problem, talk o the boss- if they don’t come some way towards helping you to find a solution, dust off the resume, it’s time to shop for a new job

Where in the world do I want to work? Ask yourself this question and the answer may surprise you. Do you want to work in the UK or is somewhere else of more interest? Working in a foreign country may seem idyllic but there will almost certainly be cultural, social or even language issues to contend with.

Are you doing now what you wanted to do when you were very small? I gave up long ago on being a professional golfer- I’m just not good enough. I haven’t though yet given up on other life goals. Setting and then progressively achieving your life goals are one of the things that lead us on the path to a happy life. Many people sadly die soon after they retire. I believe that in a lot of cases that they die because they have achieved their goal- namely that of retirement. A far better option is to set new goals- that’s every bit as important when you retire as it is before, perhaps even more so. Set new goals, commit them to paper, take some action and watch the magic happen.

What sort of working environment do I want? Many people love working in an office- the company, friendships and predictable hours suit them just fine, and they work happily there. For others, working in an office every day is a living nightmare- they crave the freedom that comes from variety of surroundings.

Wherever you want to work, there is a place for you- outdoors, indoors, driving, traveling, wherever, decide what sort of working environment suits you. What are you going to do about it? Get that resume off your hard drive and get it updated. Focus on your achievements and what you have done for the companies you have worked for. There are thousands of things that we have all achieved but we’ve probably forgotten most of them. Start keeping a “boast file”. File everything in it that you achieve- whether it’s that sales report showing you hit your target this month or just a thank you card from your partner. Review it regularly- it will make you feel better if nothing else

Find opportunities to mix things up if that suits your personality- if it doesn’t, great! we’re all different, just make sure you’re happy- the rest of the world seems to take care of itself when that happens

The Advantages of Joining a Trade Union

by Jack Harrison on Sep.28, 2009, under Politics

Whats in it for me?, people would inquire. There are a few people who think fighting for a cause to be unnecessary. They are usually just content to sit around and allow other people to fight for the causes that are crucial for the betterment of the lives of people. This kind of behavior is downright irresponsible. Apathy is not a thing to be admired. In fact, many great men have said that being a fence sitter is the most serious crime. Every human being owes it to himself and to other people to at least make a stand.

One way to make a stand would be to join a trade union. In today unstable economic climate, these trade unions could use all the aid they can get. So many workers are at risk of being fired because companies are attempting to cut costs. And each signature on a petition would certainly help a lot. But really, lets be practical. Lets go back to the first inquiry, what is, indeed, in it for you?

Ensuring your Job Security

Hard times are upon us these days, and nobody is exempt from the risk of losing his job because this is an ever-present threat. Sometimes, its all a person can do to wait and hope for the best. But there are some actions you can do to lessen the risk. If you join a trade union, they can take measures in order to ensure that you and your fellow members are not laid off unjustly. But in the situation where getting fired is unavoidable, unions can at least ensure that its members get a nice settlement.

Free Legal Advice

If you are ever in a scenario where you feel that you have been unfairly treated, you can count on the trade union to give you useful legal advice. You wont have to pay an exorbitant amount of money just to get advice from a lawyer. In fact, the trade union can even give you the representation you possibly might need.

Increased Pay and Working Conditions

The main purpose of Trade Unions is to act as advocates for the employees. They continually campaign for change, for improvement. And if you support your trade union, then you would have a bigger chance at getting a salary increase and better bonuses.

IRS Auditing Procedures

by Michael Brady on Sep.28, 2009, under Politics

Many people become incredibly panicked when they receive a notice of an audit from the irs. If you want to successfully get through the audit the best advice is to remain calm and composed throughout. Level headed thinking will be the key to making it through irs auditing procedures. Most audits are a simple way that the irs performs checks and balances and they simply want you to furnish them with some type of documentation by mail.

The irs will immediately investigate your case and formulate a dollar amount that they assume that you owe. Without any input from you, this dollar amount can be quite superfluous. If you fail to pay the amount in the designated amount of time, extreme wage garnishments and a tax lien against your property will be imposed.

The dreaded interviews are the most fear inspiring of all of the irs auditing procedures. But a tax attorney will appear for the interview on your behalf if you hire them for your case.

A tax attorney will give you the highest level of protection in the case that you are required to sit down for an interview with an irs agent. Your tax attorney will meet with the agents in your place, provide them with the requested information, and answer questions on your behalf.

The attorney will take your place at the interview table and calmly answer all of the questions to the best of their knowledge.

The irs still may find that you owe them back taxes, if this is the case then there are two main options. You can have your attorney set up a repayment plan or you can have them ask for an irs offer compromise. An irs offer compromise will have to be handled by a tax attorney.

An irs compromise is typically for a significantly lower amount of money than what the irs finds that you owe. Then they can either choose to approve the irs compromise deal or to deny it.

The irs has the option whether or not to accept the deal, but if they do then your debt will be considered paid once you make the payment. The only way that you can survive an audit is with the help of a skilled tax attorney.

Federal Housing Grants for Disabled

by Constance Nagaguchi on Sep.25, 2009, under Government

Are you planning on renovating your home or buy a new home altogether? The costs of doing these things can make it seem prohibitive, but the federal government can help cover some of the costs if you are a disabled person.

There are government housing grants for the disabled available that can help you in those endeavors. If you are a disabled veteran then you can apply for even more specific grants.

Anywhere from several hundred to several thousands dollars is available in the form of housing grants for the disabled to help you buy a home, fix up your home, or rent an apartment. After you get the grant, the money is yours – housing grants do not need to be repaid.

What makes these government housing grants even better is that you can get them even if you have bad credit. Because you are not required to pay back the money you get, they do not need to do a credit check on you.

Before you apply, you have to know and be able to detail how you plan to spend the money. Commonly, the money is used for the purchase of a home or for home improvement projects.

Use the internet as a source for information about applying for housing grants for the disabled opportunities. Applying for as many grants as possible increases the likelihood that money will be coming your way.

Some housing grants for the disabled will require you to write a proposal when you are applying. They want to make sure that you are going to use the money they give you for something important.

If you want to look for more housing grants for the disabled beyond the federal ones, you may want to look into state grants. These grants are separate from the federal government and offered by each individual state only.

To get state sponsored housing grants for the disabled, call up your state government office and they should give you the information you want.

What If Teens Can’t Get Jobs This Summer?

by Susan Potter on Sep.23, 2009, under Politics

With the economy in such a bad shape and people getting laid off everywhere, the prospects for teen jobs doesn’t look good. If teenagers this summer have a tough time getting jobs, as it looks like they will, what will they do with their time if they are unable to get them?

Teenagers may need jobs to make some much needed money but they also need jobs to keep them busy and away from trouble. Teens with jobs not only learn responsibility but they also have things to do and keep them busy which means less time hanging out and potentially getting into trouble. If many teens this summer are unable to get jobs, what will that mean for our streets and neighborhoods? Will some of these teens turn to crime?

Right now, many adults are willing to take the low paying and low skilled jobs that are usually taken by teenagers. This is because many adults just cant find anything else and something is much better than no job at all. This will take away additional jobs that would have gone to teens if the economy were in better shape. This is an unfortunate circumstance but one we face nevertheless.

Teens love the Internet and in this case maybe they can use it for two purposes. The first is to pick up some extra spending money by doing such things as filling out surveys online. This and a few other things are by no means real jobs and can only be used to make some money on the side. Nevertheless, a little money coming in is better than none at all.

The second use teenagers can get from their computer and the Internet is to look for real jobs. Many employers have now switched their recruiting efforts online and learning how to submit resumes and apply for jobs on the Internet is very important. Teens will be able to identify potential jobs easier and they will have quick access to many job sites that might aid them in finding that much needed summer job.

A Brief History Of Money

by Adela Thomas on Sep.21, 2009, under Government

The history of money is a very interesting one indeed. The barter system evolved as certain objects were traded to represent other things. Flowers, shells, feathers, and metals are just a few examples. History shows us that the ancient Liberians first used money by units of gold. Soon it became the favorite form of currency even today. The mighty shekel, the Judaic community in Israel still uses this ancient form of monetary compensation and it date backs to well before the birth of Christ. oh yeah, B.C.

The Israelites that bartered with these pieces of coin had no real financial backing for the value of the shekel. This is strange since we only understand or can inherently understand the value of money by what it is backed by. The history of money could take a freshman to senior after attempting to follow the trail, the bloody trail, of the mighty coin. Money, you know I love it.

When money today is backed by gold, it is called the gold-standard. This has evolved and today many dollars were then backed by a fraction of gold so there would not be enough to pay back everyone if they all demanded gold. Soon money evolved again and it was no longer backed by gold, but instead silver.

Soon money was no longer backed by anything, but money itself, or the faith people have in the government and federal reserve’s ability to pay them back, and their faith in others that others will still accept money as actual value.

Today money has taken one more leap where now the bank doesn’t even have the dollars to pay back the dollars that are stored. Just as there was once only a fraction of gold in reserves, now there is only a fraction of actual dollars in reserve for every dollar owed. So if the bank has $1,000 in reserves, it may loan out $10,000. The leverage was much greater in late 2008 before bear sterns collapsed as they were leveraged 40 times. This meant for every $1,000 they had, they were loaning out $40,000 and expecting interest on that money.

The monetary system is composed of many things, one is the unit of account. A unit of account is a standard numerical unit of measurement of the market value of goods, services, and other transactions. This is also known as standard or the measure of any good or service. It is the smallest and easiest method of determining th true value of something.

There is a formula to the conversion factor, this is quite complicated and can be researched online. For the basic unit of account realize that the subject at hand is the smallest form of incremental units that can be added or subtracted. That is the key to any real unit of account, can the number be added up or take from. If it has the ability to be broken down into these smaller units of measure, then the formula may be applied. The unit of measure, is a true original formulation.

UK Climate Legislation Means Business

by Daniel Stouffer on Sep.20, 2009, under Government

Since the dawn of the industrial era, which we are led to believe was 1750, we have had a seemingly never ending thirst for energy and products produced through the use of fossil fuels. Over the centuries we were not aware of the damage that we were causing and it has been only in relatively recent times that we have come to terms with the significant and threatening effects that we have caused to our environment.

The principal emitters of dangerous greenhouse gases have been identified under the new UK climate legislation which aims to take on the problem of climate change head on. These entities must take significant steps to reduce the large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions or face financial penalties appropriately.

Sadly it is not enough to just understand that excessive consumption can have significant adverse environmental effects. It would be nice to think that this thought process could be converted into action, but politicians are aware that this is very rarely the case. As corporations are the largest contributors to the problem and are ultimately driven by profits, UK climate legislation seeks to go further than the attempt of some to embrace environmental issues by forcing compliance.

Ultimately, the success or failure of a company is dictated by powerful market forces. This has not really had an effect on carbon emissions to this point, but UK climate legislation changes all of that. Companies now face a cap on the amount of emissions that they are responsible for before penalties are imposed.

The conversion to the role of a commodity means that an organization must now achieve efficiencies to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. UK climate legislation will ultimately have a big effect on carbon emissions by controlling the amount that each organization may “purchase” It is in the company’s best interests to cut down on its carbon bill.

If we look into the future, it seems clear that a majority of forward thinking countries will adopt some kind of cap and trade scheme as the consequences of inaction are becoming increasingly and more vividly obvious to us on a daily basis.

Opponents of UK climate legislation felt that its imposition would create unnecessary and prohibitive barriers to global trade and additional obstacles within the international trading arena. Nevertheless, the bill was among the first to specify mandatory engagement by major organizations.

The Climate Change Act of 2008 gave birth to the Carbon Reduction Commitment, and these activities will surely be watched with keen interest around the world. Many feel that the government of the United States will adopt something similar to the UK climate legislation, especially as the administration has indicated so. It remains to be seen what emerges from Congress.

Daniel Stouffer has a lot of information about the UK climate legislation and how a visit to www.verisae.com will be of use to you.

Expect a Carbon Reduction Bill

by Nigel Evans on Sep.19, 2009, under Government

The pressure has been growing on individual companies, producers and emitters of greenhouse gases to try and restrict the output. Up until this time, it has been voluntary to report carbon emissions but legal initiatives are now underway to make this mandatory. A carbon reduction bill has already been put in place in the UK and may soon come out in the US.

The carbon reduction bill in the UK is known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and is in the process of rollout during 2009. Companies that are affected, estimated to be 5,000 of Britain’s largest carbon emitters, must get ready for registration by assessing whether they are liable by looking back to 2008 for information.

The Climate Change Act was the catalyst for the British government to introduce a carbon reduction Bill. Going back to the Kyoto Protocol, a number of benchmarks have been set but this is the first time that far-reaching legislation has been imposed upon companies that are contributory to the problem, causing them to actively reduce their carbon footprint.

Many in the US are wondering whether legislators within Congress will have the stomach to pass a carbon reduction bill with as sweeping a change as that currently under scrutiny in the UK. While the US House of Representatives narrowly passed something akin to the UK legislation, known as the ACES Act, there is considerable doubt that the Senate will embrace in its original form.

Companies that need to comply and participate in the carbon reduction Bill, have been selected according to their annual usage of electricity. It is deemed that if they use at least 6000 MWh per year, measured through half hourly meters, that they are major emitters of carbon gases. Organizations will face considerable repercussions should they fail to perform according to the set standards, although some of the finer details are still to be worked out.

It is certainly true that the change in administration within the United States may lead to a considerable change in the approach to a carbon reduction Bill. Most industrialized nations have called for something like this for a long time and the UK situation could be now mirrored in the USA.

While they are waiting to see whether they may be impacted in the future, US organizations that fear a carbon reduction bill could now look at the Chicago Climate Exchange for a version of a voluntary carbon trading scheme. Within this market, allowances and offsets are traded on a voluntary basis, although rules must be strictly adhered to once a company has agreed to participate.

As more and more evidence comes to the surface pointing to a dangerous acceleration of global warming and climate change, it is likely that carbon reduction bills and legislation will appear in increasing number worldwide.

Daniel Stouffer has a lot of data about the carbon reduction bill and how a visit to www.verisae.com can aid you.

Asbestos Cases In Michigan

by Bart Icles on Sep.18, 2009, under Government

The state of Michigan has one of the highest deposits of the once considered “miracle mineral” of the recent past – asbestos. Found in abundance in the towns of Marquette, Negaunee, and Ishpeming, in Niagara and Iron Mountain – and even to a country as Norway. Some remote towns like L’Anse, Copper City, and Allouez were also known to have substantial deposit of this naturally occurring mineral. The discovery and prolific mining of the substance during the early 1940″s up to the late 1980’s has lead to the appearance and steady rise of asbestos related health issues and complications.

Being very flexible in nature, one of asbestos’s applications was centered on the auto industry. This was particularly and largely being incorporated in the auto manufacturing and assembly plants in the city of Detroit, thus making the state a once proud center and proclaimed Mecca of automobile production. With a large majority of the process involved in car manufacturing, car companies have ranked high in the list of potential work environments for asbestos exposure.

Other potentially dangerous areas of asbestos exposure were in places like shipyards and factories, schools, office buildings, houses and apartments, and many more. Additionally, asbestos has been widely used in firefighting suits, water and drainage pipes, stage curtains and other materials related to fire prevention and deterrent measures.

One of the main reasons why asbestos related diseases are still cropping in steady streams today is because the condition it causes – Mesothelioma and other forms of cancer, has an incubation period of 25-40 years or so. It wasn’t only until 1986 that the federal government, particularly the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth started an Asbestos Safety Program that ensured all workers in asbestos-laden factories and sites are appropriated the proper training and safety equipments.

But despite the government’s precautionary and restructuring program on asbestos use, Michigan irreparable damage had already been done to the many unsuspecting hard-workers who were infected, and thus ranking Michigan 12th for most cases of Mesothelioma in the country, and 38th for the highest death rate.

Even until today, the governments arm for the protection of the environment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is still in the process of conducting inquiries on asbestos exposure within all public areas and buildings. And in another asbestos related concern, the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine of Wayne State University established the National Center for Vermiculite and Asbestos-Related Cancers located in Detroit at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, where studies are being conducted to find a cure for Mesothelioma and further help ways to address effective methods for the early diagnosis and treatment for the condition.

Discovering you have michigan mesothelioma lung cancer is never an exciting or comforting thought. You know and your michigan mesothelioma lawyersknow it started with asbestos but you both wonder exactly where you caught it. Don’t sit content to take it as it comes, start today to hunt down a cure and help.
