How To Replace a Social Security Card
by Jonathan Anderson on Nov.30, 2009, under Government
A social security number is one of the most important number you could have. This number not only identities you to the government for tax and social security payment purposes, but it is also used for credit purposes. Without a social security number, it would be very difficult or even impossible to apply for loans, credit cards, and bank accounts.
Perhaps once in your lifetime you may have lost your social security card. Although losing your card may feel like a pain, you need not worry so much about it. As long as you remember your social security number you should be fine.
If you lost your social security card, you can easily get a replacement for free. It is good to have a social security card since you never know when you may be asked for it.
You are allowed 3 replacement cards every year and you can replace at most 10 in a lifetime. You should keep your social security card safe. Do not carry it with you.
By carrying that social security card with you, you are allowing yourself to be a victim of identity theft. If someone stole your wallet or purse and took your social security number, they could use it to open accounts and potentially ruin your credit.
To replace your social security card, you have to have the documentation to prove your identity. Documents that you can show are passports, certificates of naturalization, driver?s license, and employee work cards. Documents have to be the original or a copy issued by the agency.
Download a copy of the application for a social security card online. Fill out the form and send it to the social security office along with your documents. You can also go to the office directly and give them the application with documents.
Once the social security office has seen your documents, they will return them to you. They should also issue you a replacement social security card if everything checks out.

Federal Government Procurement Contracts Demystified
by Sunny Emmerwitz on Nov.28, 2009, under Government
Doing business with the government can seem like an overwhelming process, but in truth it doesn’t have to be that difficult. Any business that is interested in federal government procurement should register with the Central Contractor Registry (CCR). This is a database of vendors who are valid contractors and are interested in doing business with the government.
Next, you should try to discover exactly who is in charge of purchasing and awarding the contracts to business that are seeking government procurement. After all, the person who buys the paperclips for the office is probably different from the person that decides who will build the rocket engines. Always find out who is who in the agency.
Once you’ve found the people you need to contact for a particular job, it is important that you let those people know that your company is capable of fulfilling the job or the order. Federal government procurement regulations are very specific, and the agency must understand what you can do if they are going to choose your company.
You should also do what you can to promote your business. The government agencies receive a lot of promotional materials all the time, and that’s why it’s so important to try and establish personal contact with the right personnel whenever possible. Then you can send your promotional materials directly to them.
There are several important websites that small businesses should use to stay abreast of the latest vendor opportunities. Federal government procurement information is featured on the Small Business Administration site (sba.gov), as well as on a site called fedbizopps.gov.
It’s always a good idea to stay in contact with potential buyers. Federal government procurement officials will receive a lot of bids every day. If you’ve done your job right, though, your company is the one that they will think of when it is time to choose a contractor.
Of course, vendors should always remember that government officials aren’t allowed to accept gifts or gratuities. The ethics code for government procurement is very clear on this point. Although, if you deliver some samples of your work that have a minor value and are available to the public sector as well, then that will probably be permitted.
Securing government contracts can be very frustrating for a lot of businesses. The thing you have to remember is that beneath all the paperwork and regulations are just a lot of normal federal employees. They simply want to get the best deal they can for their agency. If you can work with that, you’ll be more likely to secure your contracts.
Working to secure government contracts can be a tedious and time consuming procedure. It is useful to find a government procurement service or company that manages the paperwork for you.
Fidel Castro Reported Dead – True or False?
by Jack Smith on Nov.28, 2009, under Politics
There is a strong rumour around that Fidel Castro is dead. Reports have been circulating from unconfirmed sources and have been listed high in Google Trends.
It is not that unusual for a report of a dying celebrity to be heavily featured in the news whether officially confirmed or not. Recently we had reports of Lady Gaga supposedly killed in a bomb blast or from a narcotic overdose depending on which source you read.
Due to his failing health, Fidel Castro has been reported as “on his deathbed” for some time now. In July 2006 he had emergency intestinal surgery to stem bleeding from diverticulitis, and since then he has been under constant medical supervision. He has constructed a state-of-the-art hospital suite in his principal residence where he is surrounded by his well meaning family and a host of Cuba’s finest doctors. His failing health made him give up power some years ago and hand over the reigns to his brother Raul. Since then he has only been seen in public once or twice.
The state of health of “El Presidente” has been the subject of speculation for some time, but little or no information is given out by the Cuban authorities. Apparently Perez Hilton tried to report that Castro was dead in 2007, but that story turned out to be false.
In January 2009 Castro asked Cubans not to worry about his failing heath or lack of recent appearances, nor to be disturbed by his future death. Inevitably the rumours are likely to linger on for a while yet.

What Is A Lemon Law?
by Frank Hodgen on Nov.25, 2009, under Government
You might have heard about a lemon law before. You perhaps not have, however are still asking yourself what lemon laws are. In the event that this sounds like you we can help you realize what a lemon law is. Keep on reading to find out.
A lemon law are laws that are made to assist those who are buying a car. You may have purchased a car that persons call these lemon cars. They are duds. They break down and have everything wrong with them. Every state has them as they are very treacherous.
What the Better Business Bureau has found, people who buy used cars can’t afford that much money for a used car. They can’t pay for the repairs that most of the cars require and many car companies have cars that are used and they need to get off their lots. They fail to mention these things leaving these people with a hefty bill.
Normally, they find that these things happened just a few months after they got the car from the car lot. The things that went wrong should have been made aware to the consumer. That is why the lemon law that each state has is there. It’s there to help make sure you get your monies worth.
Now, if this is seen eighteen months after the car is bought or before eighteen thousand miles, the person who sold the car or the manufacturer should correct this problem. If they try to repair the damage and nothing can be done, they are to then replace the car. They must attempt to repair it at least four times for this to work.
The Better Business Bureau has been looking into this and firmly supports the customer when it comes to problems like these. They say they have witnessed too many accidents happen at the fault of a lemon car in which the lemon law was put into place.
As you now know what a lemon law is you might want to look at what laws exist in your state. If you don’t you mind be getting something that you don’t need to have and you have rights that can help you win in court. Don’t waste any time if you buy used cars. Whilst you could be thinking about what you could be entitled to, there are many more things that these laws do. They can help save lives.
Naturally, there are so many different areas of law that it’s difficult to keep up. For instance due to the internet, we now have people who specialize in cyber law.
A Debtor’s Guide to Bankruptcies
by Alon Darvish on Nov.24, 2009, under Government
We all know people who claim to be legal experts but have no formal training. If such a person has told you that you should run up your credit cards before you file for bankruptcy because all your debt will be discharged anyway, please disregard their advice. If the Bankruptcy Court senses that you are acting in bad faith and taking advantage of the system then they will dismiss your claim. Therefore, to get the Bankruptcy Court to stay on your side and give you the benefit of the doubt, you need to make sure you have not used your credits cards within 90 days prior to filing for bankruptcy.
It is understandable that most people who are filing for bankruptcy are doing so because they have little or no money to pay their debts. It is, however, a great idea to make some payments at least to some of your creditors with any disposable income you may have. It will help your cause with the Bankruptcy Court when they perceive that you are willing and would make payments to all your creditors if you had the means.
Bankruptcy petitions require mounds of information and financial data. Thus you can reduce your stress and help your attorney file your claim quickly by doing some homework. You will want to document or gather the following: (1) Mortgage(s) – Determine what your current appraisal value is as well as your pay-off amount, determine the mortgagors information, and determine what your monthly payments are and how many payments you are behind, if applicable; (2) Vehicle(s) – Ascertain the market value of all your vehicles, and if financed or leased, collect the lenders information and the pay-off amount; (3) Personal Property – make a list and place a value on your collective furniture and furnishings, collective clothing and apparel, collective jewelry, cash on hand, balance in checking and savings accounts, and any pensions plans; (4) List of Unsecured Creditors – Collect the addresses of all your unsecured creditors (i.e., credit cards, medical bills, personal loans, cash advances) and how much you owe; (5) Pay Stubs – Obtain pay stubs or proof of income for the 3 months prior to filing.
Make sure you have filed all your taxes with the Internal Revenue Service. The Bankruptcy Court will require that you be current on your taxes and usually, as is the case in Los Angeles courts, will require you to furnish your returns from the past two years. In addition, it is a tremendous help for your attorney to have your tax returns when drafting your petition to ensure all of your numbers are consistent. Do not worry if you do not have a copy of your tax returns because you can get a copy mailed to you from the IRS in just a couple weeks.
A complete accounting of all your expenditures can be extremely helpful in allowing the Bankruptcy Court to get a better sense of your financial pressure. Using your bank statements, your credit card statements, and your memory make a list of all of your regular monthly expenditures. Remember to include expenditures on items such as food, clothing, laundry, medications, taxes, alimony, school expenses, and personal care items.
When you are dealing with complex matters that can affect you for years to come it is a great idea to retain a specialist. Since you are reading this article it is likely that you are not bankruptcy savvy. Therefore, hire a qualified bankruptcy attorney to help you file and save yourself the stress of drafting a petition and the stress of having your petition dismissed for failing to provide correct information.
If you are contemplating a fresh start, think about filing for Bankruptcy. The Law Offices of Alon Darvish helps individuals file for bankruptcy.
When Too Big To Fail Becomes Too Big For A Lot Of Other Things
by Tom Wald on Nov.23, 2009, under Government
By Tom Wald
Anyone who knows me knows I hate the Wall Street bailouts. I think the concept of “Too Big To Fail”, or TBTF as its now commonly abbreviated, is perhaps the greatest oxymoron of our times. If Too Big To Fail made any sense Aaron Gibson and Slavko Vranes would be considered the two greatest professional athletes ever. Never heard of those two guys? Well I guess that’s sort of my point.
However, unlike a couple of athletes too large to keep pace with faster and more agile competitors, the TBTF bailouts on Wall Street have been what I call the non-violent crime of the century. You see when you take the taxes paid by millions of hard working Americans and hand that money over to billionaires so they can use it to pay themselves more billions after they’ve sabotaged the economy for everyone else, well I’m afraid at that point you might as well argue to free Bernie Madoff, at least his theft wasn’t government funded.
Yet even after all of this our nation’s new class system took a bizarre and deeply concerning turn last week when reports filtered through the news that Wall Street bailout recipients Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup had received doses of the H1N1 vaccine in quantities greater than and on delivery schedules well before those of public hospitals and doctor’s offices. So in addition to getting their seven and eight figure bonuses financed by our taxes, these bankers and traders who created the economic mess that manifested itself in ten-plus percent unemployment last week are also getting the Swine Flu vaccine before our kids.
So now TBTF has become TBTWILFTV – Too Big To Wait In Line For The Vaccine. What might we see next? Commuter lanes on our highways for Wall Street employees designated TBTHTSIT – Too Big To Have To Sit In Traffic. Or perhaps government classified hot lines into Disney for Wall Street parents deemed TBTWOLFHMT – Too Big To Wait On Line For Hannah Montana Tickets.
Sound crazy? No crazier than a few hundred billion out of our pockets and first dibs on vaccines might have sounded a year ago. I wonder what kind of a response you would have gotten had you floated those ideas at an Obama victory rally.
If have an opinion about all of this, post it on SoundOffToAmerica.
Go Public With Your Company and Raise Capital Fast
by James Scott on Nov.22, 2009, under Government
Take Your Company Public for Less Than $5,000 OK, you’re ready to take your company to the next level and your CFO and legal counsel have advised you to go public to raise capital as well as to retain some of those prize employees with stock options and to bait that new sales executive with a signing bonus made up of stock options. You’ve looked into everything from pink sheets to reverse mergers to OTCBB to IPO and you have come to the conclusion you’re going to need to take on investors so that you can afford to follow through with your plan. If you’re lacking the funds to dive right in and start creating your public structure, here is a way that just about any business can afford to go public.
First, get a real business plan. Your business plan needs to sizzle and reel in the investor and clearly paint a picture of your vision to the investor and their advisors. Next, you’ll want to raise an initial round of cash quickly so that you can afford to take your company public without hindering your current company structure with additional ancillary costs. You’re going to need something fast and affective; you should consider having a professionally authored private placement memorandum put together for your company.
If you are trying to go public via OTCBB a Regulation D Rule 504 exemption will suffice, if you are trying to achieve an IPO you’ll need to go with a Regulation D Rule 505 exemption (pink sheets and reverse mergers into shell corps are not very successful in immediate and long term success so I would suggest you stay away from these structures). Build into the PPM verbiage that you are raising an initial round of capital that will be used to take your company public. When savvy investors see that they are investing in a real, viable pre-IPO or pre-OTCBB formation you will see investors climbing out of the woodwork to give you cash if your business concept is sound.
Next you hire the consultants (usually the same firm that wrote your PPM) to start the process of taking you public. On the PPM your Mini/Maxi should allow you to use capital almost immediately to get the ball rolling on your public company. You can count on a solid OTCBB going for between $75k and $250k and an IPO going for $1M+ so have your PPM written accordingly. If you follow the path set forth above you will notice something extraordinary.
The only out of pocket expense you had was for your Private Placement Memorandum (and your business plan if you didn’t have one) and 100% of the capital needed to go public was supplied by greedy investors who are excited to invest because of the quick payoff of their investment when you go public. This process means you can literally take your company public for less than $5,000 (the typical cost of a strategic Private Placement Memorandum. This is a simple, strategic and inexpensive way to get the capital you need for your company quickly, without using your limited financial resources in the process.

Government Contracts Are A Great Opportunity For Small Businesses
by Evelyn LeGrand on Nov.21, 2009, under Government
If you’re a small business providing certain goods and services, government contracts are a great way to go to develop a great source of recurring revenue. The United States government is one of the largest purchasers in the world, and if you can secure a contract, you can usually rely on it for a good source of revenue. But how, exactly, do small companies get started with it?
There is a process that you need to go through though if you are interested in supplying the government with the items that they need. The good news is that the government has set targets that at least a certain percentage of their purchases should come from small businesses.
Any business that bids on government contracts has to go through a certain process. This includes properly classifying their company by the size and type of industry or business they are in. These standards are dictated by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and the SBA size standard.
The government agencies that are offering the contract will need this information. And, since some of the contracts that they award are specified for certain types of business, you should also specify whether or not your company qualifies as a woman-owned business, a veteran-owned business, a HUBZone business, or a service-disabled business.
The next step is in getting government contracts is to register your business with the Central Contractor Registration (CCR) database. Many government agencies use this database in order to find out about companies that might be able to provide the goods and services that they need. This requires an NAICS code, the SBA size standard for the company, the company’s DUNS number, Federal Tax Identification number, and Standard Industrial Classification codes.
Once your company is in the CCR database, you will start receiving the various opportunities to start bidding on different contracts. Some agencies may even contact you if they feel like you have the particular products or services they need. However, you shouldn’t wait for offers. You should always look for your own opportunities as well.
There are a number of resources available to help businesses to pursue those opportunities. FedBizOpps.gov is a good example. This is where you can find projects that are worth more than $25,000. This is a good site to frequent, and you will likely find the contracts that are right for your company. Some agencies will also list many smaller projects on Bid Boards or on their websites. These are also good places to look for some starter contracts.
One other way that you can learn about bidding opportunities is to become a GSA Schedule Contractor. Some types of products and services are purchased exclusively through the GSA, so this is a good place to start. Once you can start recognizing all your opportunities you will be able to keep the revenue flowing.
The procedure of adding an application for a request for proposal (RFP) is difficult when not understood clearly. Once understood it is essential to provide well written government contracts. Evelyn has had enough writing practice with construction contracts, government procurement and other similar topics that she understands the process. For additional information, see her other resources.
Tax Credit: Some Really Great Tips
by Brendan Wilkie on Nov.21, 2009, under Government
For those that decided to make some life changes you probably quickly discovered the cost can be hard to manage in these difficult times. What you probably didn’t know is that their is a tax credits for those that have used weight loss programs or smoking cessation to better their health.
A lot of insurance providers won’t cover these costs anymore which really doesn’t make sense given the fact that long term both of these problems can create expensive health care issues that will cost these companies a lot more in the end.
The IRS, of all people, quickly realized this was an issue and in 2003 they worked to pass laws so that people would be able to claim a tax credit for money they had paid to participate in these types of programs.
This is not a tax deduction, but instead a credit, meaning you get total credit on the amount you spent to participate in activities related to these goals.
Your medical expenses related to a smoking cessation program can also be included. Everything except aids that didn’t require a prescription, like nicotine gum and patches, can be included on your return.
If you are claiming a tax credit for weight loss the medical expenses you paid for the treatment of diseases related to your weight can be included. They must be diagnosed by a doctor as related however. A few examples included diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Your membership fees to take part in weight reduction programs and meetings can also be included. Things like gym memberships can not however, but you can list them as separate fees related to your weight loss if you want.
In order to claim these credits you will need to fill out the Health Coverage Tax Credit form, Form 8885, and have it attached to your Form 1040. Make sure you also report it on line 67 of the Form 1040 and check the box labeled C. You can not claim this credit if you use a 1040 A or 1040EZ though so make sure you are using the right one.
You also need to have attached, all of your proofs of payment that you included on the Form 8885 as things you were not paid in advance for. If you are electronically filing your return you will need to attach that documentation to Form 8543. Pay stubs, bank checks and even bank statements showing your premiums being automatically deducted can be used as proofs of payment.
At Oduox you will discover all sorts of tax information that will really help you get your finances in order.
